nasty and riddled with hyperbole and ad hominem attacks?
Or do you think perhaps the internet has influenced things in this direction through anonymity and the inability to get the reward for what your tongue has provoked?

I think it’s always been like this but because of technology, we are saturated in it. People do seem a bit angrier though. There have always been bad politicians, there are bad people in any group. We get to hear all the details now though.

Nasty political yack has always occurred, but the internet has allowed us to share it with everyone in the world (instead of your neighbors or people sitting around in a bar.)
So the scope of communication has increased, but not particularly the intensity of it all.
It is an OLD truism that the fastest way to make enemies is to talk politics or religion. That’s nothing new.
